Peter van der Ploeg
Coastal Art
PAINTINGS
Peter van der Ploeg turns to landscape to find his subject matter.
This is where he finds stillness, tension, loneliness or danger.
Human beings, whether actually present or not, are mostly the cause of the subdued tension. People and nature are entwined, eventually attaining a state of harmony together. He uses an almost photographic technique in order to achieve this result in his paintings.
Technique
My paintings are all created on panel with acrylic paint. This quick-drying paint allows me to work in many, almost translucent layers. So I can work in minute detail, lending my work a realistic and photographic quality.
Inspiration
I am inspired by the coasts of France, Denmark and the Netherlands. The last years I focus on the isles of the Waddensea: Texel, Vlieland and Terschelling .The vast panoramic views without any trace of human life allow me to be self-reflective on the one hand, but strongly connected to the real world of the Waddensea on the other.
I don't copy reality; I bend it to my will. The light plays a major role in my paintings: it can be so intriguing that it reduces the subject to a secondary level. It's the suggestion of their outline that creates the still-life quality of my paintings. For me, these are the only things that are real amidst the many uncertainties of life.
Things are about to happen
You find yourself at a crossroads: things are about to happen, nature is holding its breath. Become part of this reality; it may be more realistic than life itself. To define my style is not important. Just watch and become part of the image, become part of the light and feast on my reality.
